Sizing and Grading

Veneer sheet sizing and grading is the fifth stage of the beech veneer production process at Alesta UA. Sheets that have gone through the drying process are first cut to target dimensions at this stage, then classified through quality control to form groups suitable for customer requirements.

What is the Sizing Process?

Sizing is the process of cutting dried beech veneer sheets according to customer orders or standard product dimensions. At this stage, sheets are prepared with clean edges and specified dimensions using specialised cutting equipment. Dimensional stability of the sheets is maintained during sizing and cutting losses are minimised.

Grading Criteria

After sizing, each veneer sheet is assessed by our quality control specialists according to the following criteria:

Colour homogeneity: The consistency of colour distribution across the sheet surface is examined.
Grain regularity: The regularity of the natural grain structure of beech wood is assessed.
Knot presence: The size and position of natural knots on the sheet are examined.
Crack and split control: Cracks that may have formed during drying or cutting are identified.
Surface defects: Colour stains, resin marks, and similar surface defects are assessed.

Quality Grades

Following assessment, sheets are separated into quality grades. Each grade corresponds to different application areas and customer requirements. First-grade sheets are used in furniture and interior applications requiring flawless surfaces, while lower-grade sheets are utilised in plywood production and industrial applications.

Customer-Focused Grading

At Alesta UA, the sizing and grading process can be customised according to customer requirements. For customers requesting a specific quality grade, dimension, and moisture content, the production process is planned with these parameters in mind from the very beginning. This approach enables us to deliver consistent and predictable product quality that fully meets the needs of our customers.
